Not
many people seem to know who the original Grendle was. I'm not sure if that's
because they never read Beowulf or that they just don't remember Grendle's
name. I really really hope it's the latter. Beowulf: a great place to learn
what a kenning is. So, who is this creature that bears a form of that name?
She's herself: pessimistic, outsider, egotistical, and philosophical. Most of the time, she's just plain depressed (but don't tell her I said that; she's touchy); but, truly, Grendelle is the supreme introvert, always analysing everything she does and applying Kant's 'universal' principle---that a moral is only good if you can have a world where that principle is obeyed by everyone (with her spin on it, it's 'can I function and be consistent if I always obey this moral'). Understand that Grendelle is very concerned with consistency of behavior. What good, she thinks, is a single good deed or thought if not done repeatedly? Where is the seat of personality and sanity but in consistency? She tends to dwell on the past as a way to map out better behavior for the future. Grendelle takes the view that a lesson can be learned from everything, if one is just willing to analyze and evaluate. Some would call this soul-searching, but that has far too many mystical overtones for Grendelle's liking. While on the surface she likes to think that she doesn't respond to authority figures and that she is the ultimate authority over herself, she does subconsciously believe like a good little grendle what people tell her. Surprisingly, no one has taken advantage of this, which is good; once lit, Grendelle's rage burns long, no matter how long it took to kindle. Hah! Enough philosophy, Grendelle is also a lover of the simplicity of life. She could live forever in the moment with a good book, a warm comforter, a bag of doritos, a warm cup of tea, and a thunderstorm. Pure perception and sensation. Any suggestions that Grendelle escapes in her books would be met with a blank stare and then countered with a silent glare. Again, touchy girl. Grendelle's sole claim to fame is her technocrashing ability. Don't ask, but it's true: why else would only the computers she works with act 'flakey'? Grendelle is not a technophobe; she is merely easily frustrated in learning new things. T'any rate, Grendelle walks her own path (somewhat) fearlessly, (mostly) proud of herself and all that she is. What more could you ask for in life?
