Photography : Astronomy : Comet Pan-STARRS

Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4 PanSTARRS) appeared close to a one-day-old crescent Moon on March 12, 2013. To get the best view a group of us hiked to the top of Tortugas Mountain ("A" Mountain, home to Tortugas Observatory). After appreciating a lovely sunset over Las Cruces, we were treated to the appearance of the young Moon and the comet a few degrees to the side. It was difficult to see the comet with the naked eye, but it revealed itself easily to binoculars or a telephoto lens. The combination of comet and Earthshine on the Moon was spectacular!
