Photography : Land & Sky: Dust Storm

These photos of the Tombaugh Observatory on NMSU campus demonstrate the severity of the dust storms in the Southwest. These pictures were taken at random dust storms over the course of six years. The top (first) photo is on a clear day, for comparison. In the second photo you can no longer see the Organ Mountains, the third photo you might be able to convince yourself you can see see Tortugas Mountain, the fourth photo Tortugas is definitely gone, and the fifth photo you start to lose the stadium. I estimated visibility based on the distances to the Organ mountains (9.6 mi or 15.3 km), Tortugas mountain (3.2 mi or 5 km), and the stadium (2,300 feet, 0.43 mi, or 0.71 km).
